“The Deepest Blues Are Black” is about ambiguous feelings. By using fragments of my life that seem recognizable to others I seek to awaken latent feelings and create an unspoken connection of understanding.
This project is called The Untitled to emphasize the feeling of depletion and the difficulties expressing grief. Grief can feel like you have suddenly been ripped out of the flow of your life and you are stuck on the side of the river, not moving. The flow is in front of you but you cannot reach it.
In Roman mythology there is a story about Narcissus, a young man who fell in love with his own reflection in a water pond. Every time he reached out for his beautiful image it was disturbed by ripples in the water. Never able to fulfill his love, his heart broke and caused his death. At the riverbank where he was found a fragile flower had emerged. This flower is named Narcissus after the story, commonly known as Daffodil.
This project aims to create introspection through imagery. Memory, identity and melancholy are key words for this body of work, which is exploring memory in relation to loss and nostalgia within family.
